Trailer watch: Winter’s Tale

We’re closing in on the Valentines Day’s schlock as Hollywood starts tolling out the trailers for next February. First up on deck is the Akiva Goldsman directed Winter’s Tale, packed with stars (Colin Farrell, Jennifer Connelly, Russell Crowe) and fairy tale romance.

It’s one of the those films that jumps through time in the name of love. It makes no sense but it’s all romantic… and stuff. It’s based on the book of the same name by Mark Helprin.

The official synopsis of the film is as follows:
”Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, Winter’s Tale is a story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil. The film stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay (TV’s Downton Abbey), and Oscar® winners Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt , Eva Marie Saint (On the Waterfront) and Russell Crowe.  Winter’s Tale also introduces young newcomers Ripley Sobo and Mckayla Twiggs (both from Broadway’s Once). The film marks the directorial debut of Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”), who also wrote the screenplay, based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Helprin.”
The film opens, you guessed it, February 14th. Check out the trailer below.

In a recent global live Q+A, The Hobbit director Peter Jackson and members of the cast answered questions via YouTube with fans around the world. The hour long video can be viewed as an archive here.

The third trailer details more of the internal struggles faced by Bilbo Baggins, as he faces off with the namesake of the film, the Benedict Cumberbatch-voiced dragon Smaug. We’re also given plenty of never-before-scene footage from the film, reminding us that the film’s much anticipated debut is not too far away.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits cinemas December 13th. Check out the new trailer below.
”summer noir blending together a thrilling cocktail of southern gothic, pop art and the nouvelle vague.”
Trailer watch: The Punk Singer

Awhile back we talked about the upcoming Kathleen Hanna documentary The Punk Singer and the influence Hanna and her contemporaries have had a a great number of people through her career.

Now the trailer for the film has made its way online and can be seen above. The film, by indie filmmaker Sini Anderson, is “a rock documentary about Kathleen Hanna, her influence over the riot grrrl movement of the 1990’s and- on a more scholarly approach- her contribution to third wave feminism”. Featured in the film are interviews with noted icon Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, Carrie Brownstein and Hanna’s husband Adam Horovitz (known to some as the Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock).

The Punk Singer premiered at this year’s SXSW Festival and will hit theatres November 29th.

Trailer watch: Hilarious new Lego Movie trailer

The new and hilarious trailer for The Lego Movie recently hit the web and showcases the film’s character driven humour in spades.

The movie, starring the voices of Will Arnett (as Batman), Chris Pratt (as the film’s protagonist Emmett), Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman, tells the story of an ordinary guy (Pratt) who is mistaken as the “Special One” meant to save the Lego universe. The film is directed by Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller and is due in cinemas February 7, 2014.

The Lego Movie also features the voices of Colbie Smulders (playing Wonder Woman), Channing Tatum (Superman) and Alison Brie.

It’s been awhile since a trailer has been this funny. Hopefully the rest of the movie is as funny.

Trailer watch: Jackie Chan stars in Police Story 2013

One of my earliest memories of watching Jackie Chan as a kid were his Police Story and Project A movies. While I was too young to fully comprehend just what was going on, I enjoyed both immensely as two different styles of the Jackie Chan filmography. While the latter was a great laugh, Police Story was Hong Kong action filmmaking at its finest.

Now, almost three decades since the original, Police Story 2013 sees Jackie Chan return to his darker, action roots in this remake. In this version, Chan plays a mainland China police officer investigating a kidnapping.

Police Story 2013 will showcase a new side of Chan, who cut his hair short in order to look more like a reliable and responsible mainland Chinese police officer. “My character this time is much calmer than those from before,” said Chan, “and I don’t make a single silly face in this movie.”

The film premiered early this year at the Beijing Film Festival and will open in China this December. No word yet on international release.

Trailer watch: Keanu Reeves in new 47 Ronin trailer

Looking like the Eastern-tinged rendition of 300 (except decidedly less crap), 47 Ronin stars Keanu Reeves as a member of a band of samurais (ronins) seeking revenge for the death and dishonour of their master at the hands of ruthless shogun. The story is a fictionalised account of the Japanese tale of the “forty-seven ronin“.

The film was originally set for release November 2012 but was initially pushed back to February of this year, before getting its final delay to December 25, 2013.

Costing an estimated $175 million to make, the film was shot in Budapest and the United Kingdom by relative newcomer and first time feature film director Carl Rinsch. It’s not a bad budget to work with for a first timer, whose previous directing credits were limited to three short films.

Pacific Rim star Rinko Kikuchi and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Pearl Harbor, Planet of the Apes) co-star alongside Reeves.

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage joins the cast as Boliver Trask.

Officially, the synopsis of the film is as follows;
”The X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The characters from the original X-Men film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from X-Men: First Class in a battle that must change the past – to save their future.”
Watch the final trailer for Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The much anticipated sequel to the box office smash The Hunger Games is set to hit cinemas November 22nd. Now Lionsgate has released the final trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, a brief, but action packed one-minute of footage that premiered during Game 4 of the World Series.

Starring Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence, the film continues on the story from where the first film left off.

The run down of the film is as follows;
”After winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) returns home to District 12 along with fellow winner Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Shortly after returning home, they must embark on a “Victory Tour” of the districts, leaving behind their close friends and family again. On the day of the Victory Tour, President Snow (Sutherland) threatens Katniss’ best friend and pretend cousin, Gale Hawthorne, outraged after she and Peeta broke the rules of the 74th Hunger Games that allowed them both to win. During the tour, Katniss senses that a rebellion is brewing in the districts, but the Capitol is still firmly in control as Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games, known as a Quarter Quell, an event taken place every 25 years – a competition that could change Panem forever.”
Trailer watch: Mr Peabody & Sherman

DreamWorks’ upcoming animated feature Mr Peabody & Sherman has just unveiled its new extended trailer. Based on characters featured on The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, the 3D feature showcases the voice talents of Modern Family star Ty Burrell, Allison Janney, Stephen Colbert, Mel Brooks, Stanley Tucci and Leslie Mann.

The official synopsis for the film is as follows;
The film will feature Mr. Peabody, a talking dog who is the smartest being in the world, and his adopted boy Sherman. When Sherman’s use of their time traveling WABAC machine results in disastrous and comical results, it is up to them to put things on track before the space-time continuum is irreparably destroyed.
From the trailer we can see that Marty takes the Delorean back in time and ultimately alters the future’s timeline…. oh sorry, wrong film. Mr. Peabody does look like a fun for everyone and the best thing about it, it looks like there are no musical numbers.

Mr Peabody & Sherman is directed by Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) and is slated to hit cinemas March 7th, 2014.
